07 Mar CN Workers Back Union Strike Mandate as Contract Talks for 3,000 Employees Continue
CN workers have expressed their support for a strike vote as negotiations for a contract involving approximately 3,000 Canadian employees continue. Unifor, the union representing the workers, announced on Sunday that Local 100 and Council 4000 voted 98% and 97%, respectively, in favour of a strike. The two sides are currently in the final stages of negotiations, with another round of talks set to take place next week.
Unifor had previously broken off talks with CN and started the strike vote as it called on the railway company to withdraw concessions. Some of these concessions reportedly include the loss of accrued vacation entitlements, removal of consent for early retirement at age 55, and a flex benefit plan that does not expand coverage and would make workers pay for services such as dental.
CN, however, has said that its latest offer includes a net increase in pay and benefits. The Montreal-headquartered company also stated that it does not expect its operations to be impacted if the workers, including clerical staff and mechanics, take labor action.
