28 Jan CPKC and Unifor Reach Tentative Agreement, Averting Strike

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Unifor have reached a tentative four-year collective agreement, just over a day before a potential strike could have disrupted operations.

The agreement, announced late Monday, covers approximately 1,200 mechanical employees represented by Unifor across Canada. These employees include mechanics, labourers, diesel service attendants, and mechanical support staff.

Union members had previously voted 99% in favor of a strike mandate, authorizing labour action if a deal wasn’t reached by 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday.

“We are pleased to have reached a tentative collective agreement at the negotiating table with our mechanical employees in Canada,” said Keith Creel, president and CEO of CPKC. He added that the agreement benefits employees and their families while ensuring the company continues to meet customer needs and contribute to the Canadian economy.

Details of the agreement remain confidential until it has been ratified.

This resolution follows another recent agreement between Canadian National Railway (CN) and the union representing 750 signals and communication workers, who had also voted in favor of a strike mandate. These agreements mark significant steps toward maintaining stability in Canada’s railway operations.
