20 Oct Fire at Dhaka Import Cargo Hub Disrupts Materials Supply—Exports by Prime Freight UnaffectedMajor Fire at Dhaka Cargo Complex Threatens Garment & Pharma Shipments
A large fire erupted last weekend at the import cargo section of Dhaka’s airport cargo village, severely damaging warehouses that stored raw materials, spare parts and garments en route to domestic manufacturers. The blaze reportedly destroyed inventory worth over US $1 billion.
Important note: This incident affected imported cargo only. Export cargo handled by Prime Freight was not impacted.
What happened
The fire broke out in a bonded warehouse where shipments of zippers, buttons, fabrics and other accessories were held before being transferred to factories. While operations at the terminal are continuing, the damage to accessory stock means that factories in Bangladesh are likely to face shortages of key components over the next several weeks.
Why this matters
Export shipments handled by Prime Freight remain unaffected, but sourcing and production of goods for export could be delayed if accessory supply chain issues persist.
Since the fire disrupted imported accessory shipments, manufacturing of finished garments—particularly items that require zippers and buttons—may slow down or be delayed.
We continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
