03 Mar Halifax Port Making Progress in Reducing Rail Congestion, but Challenges Remain
PSA Halifax has provided an official update on the ongoing rail congestion at the Atlantic Hub Terminal, reporting significant progress despite severe winter challenges.
As of February 27, 2025, PSA Halifax, in collaboration with CN Rail, has reduced the grounded rail backlog by nearly 40%, bringing it down to 96,000 feet (3,185 containers) from its peak of 160,000 feet (5,210 containers) on February 9, 2025.
At PSA Fairview Cove Terminal, the backlog has been completely cleared, with only 9,000 feet (285 containers) remaining.
To further improve fluidity, PSA Halifax has deployed additional rail crews and increased train frequency from seven to nine trains per week. If weather conditions remain stable, the port aims to reduce the backlog to approximately 65,000 feet by mid-March 2025.
Shippers should continue expecting delays, but improvements are evident, and PSA Halifax is committed to restoring operational efficiency.
