05 Dec Indian Port Workers Plan Indefinite Strike Affecting Key Ports
Indian port workers have announced an indefinite strike starting December 17, 2024, over unresolved wage disputes and productivity-linked incentives. The strike, organized by the National Coordination Committee of the Major Port Workers Federation, follows months of delays in implementing a settlement signed on September 27, 2024.
The strike is expected to impact key ports, including Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) in Maharashtra and Tuticorin Port (V.O. Chidambaranar Port) in Tamil Nadu, two critical hubs for Indian trade. Workers at these major ports will join the industrial action, further exacerbating supply chain disruptions.
A precursor protest is scheduled for December 5, signaling the seriousness of the unions’ demands. The federation has criticized the Indian Port Association for its inaction and failure to implement the agreed-upon terms.
In anticipation of widespread disruption, shippers are exploring alternative solutions, such as rerouting cargo through private ports and leveraging air freight. The strike could severely impact India’s supply chains, particularly in industries reliant on timely cargo movement.
