MEA Requests Special Mediator as Port of Montreal Faces Unlimited General Strike

30 Oct MEA Requests Special Mediator as Port of Montreal Faces Unlimited General Strike

October 29, 2024 – Amid a negotiation deadlock, the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) has formally requested that Minister of Labour and Seniors Steven MacKinnon appoint a special mediator to facilitate an agreement by December 3, 2024. Recent attempts to resume constructive talks with the Longshoremen’s Union have failed, leading the union to plan an unlimited general strike at the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, operated by TerMont, starting Thursday at 11 a.m.

This escalating pressure tactic threatens to disrupt operations at Canada’s second-largest port, affecting various companies reliant on these terminals and further straining the MEA’s financial resources amid declining volumes.

With the impasse threatening widespread operational impacts, the MEA has issued an urgent appeal for governmental intervention. An official request was submitted to the Minister’s office today, although the MEA has declined to comment further on ongoing negotiations.
